Harbours and Waterways

Faber Maunsell, as part of the global AECOM group, is independently ranked world number one in marine and port consultancy by Engineering News Record (2006). In responding to the particular demands of the ports and harbours sector, we deliver solutions to port investors, owners, and operators that align with operational and commercial objectives.

Owners of ports and other maritime facilities require a wide range of engineering services to design, construct, operate and maintain their facilities. Faber Maunsell’s team brings a multidisciplinary approach to port, harbour and marine facility developments, applying a mix of planning, specialist engineering, environmental and transportation skills in an appropriate balance for any development. Our clients range from major port operators to private sector clients with waterfront developments.

We understand that elegant design and efficient delivery in a port or harbour environment needs to be simple, flexible and cost effective. Reacting in a timely manner to market trends and opportunities makes the difference between success and failure.

We have built up close working relationships with many of the key stakeholders who influence the successful outcome of port developments giving us an ability to deliver solutions efficiently. We frequently assist clients in their working arrangements with Defra, the Department for Transport, Local and Regional Authorities, the Environment Agency, plus local, national and international conservation agencies. These relationships are supported through our local office network throughout the UK.

Faber Maunsell provides a multi-skilled and comprehensive capability to investigate, assess, design and engineer solutions in the waterway environment, from expertise in the planning and construction of new waterways development, restoration of historic bridges right through to having in house archaeological and ecological survey specialists.

Our teams provide assistance at all stages of the project lifecycle, for example scoping and site investigations for assessment and design purposes, strategic advice for regional development issues and providing the expert support for Planning Applications and reviews.

One of the key challenges in working in the waterway environment is being able to recognise the presence of environmentally sensitive flora and fauna and being able to accommodate them within any design solution.  This is one of the key strengths of Faber Maunsell in having a large number of our own in house ecologists including industry recognised bat surveyors and reptile experts working closely alongside our more traditional civil and structural engineers.

As the demands of global trade continue to accelerate, port and harbour owners turn to us for engineering services.  The firm draws on individuals with diversified technical expertise combined with extensive knowledge of local markets and environments.  The ability to apply world-wide expertise to the solution of local project issues is a hallmark of the successful Faber Maunsell approach to maritime projects.
